No Christmas concert on Jan.7 in Chisinau central square
Lucia Culev, head of the municipal division for culture told IPN that the local authorities have already organized festivities for the New Calendar Christmas on December 25. “How many Christmases shall we organize? We’ve already done it by the New Calendar”, she said.
Meanwhile, Ala Paslariuc, head of the Ministry of Culture’s information and communication service, said that the Ministry participates only in the organization of shows for national holidays, not religious ones.
Most of Moldovan churches, both those subordinated to the Metropolitan Church of Moldova under the Russian Patriarchy and those subordinated to the Metropolitan Church of Basarabia under the Romanian Patriarchy, celebrate Christmas on January 7. Priest Ioan Cosoi, administrative vicar of the Metropolitan Church of Basarabia told IPN that there are only three churches in Chisinau observing the Nativity on December 25 – the Saint Theodora of Sihla Church, the Saints Peter and Paul Church and the Holy Trinity Church. Additionally, there 5 churches in districts that follow the New Calendar.
