Power to People: Activists reiterate demand to authorities
They reiterated this demand during the night that hundreds of activists spent “barricaded” at the beginning of the boulevard leading to Sargsyan’s office.
They gave the authorities until Wednesday afternoon to provide an answer.
Still late on Tuesday activists of the No To Plunder group were considering an option of sending a group of representatives to meet with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan. They did not, however, come up with a definite position on the matter.
As the standoff between protesters and police continued, activists used dustbins from around the area to build a barricade to shield themselves in the event of another attempt by riot police to clear their demonstration.
Some members of parliament, actors and other public figures came to the venue during the night responding to the call to create a “live” wall between the opposing sides to avoid possible clashes.
The current protests stem from the decision by the Public Services Regulatory Commission to raise electricity tariffs in Armenia by 7 drams (about 1.5 cents) from August 1. In making the decision the state regulator partially granted the request by the Russian-owned Electricity Networks of Armenia that had asked the tariffs to be raised by over 40 percent (17 drams).
