Travel: Three places to go in 2015
To help you avoid visiting the same familiar places, here are three can’t-miss destinations to visit.
3. HONG KONG
Hong Kong was in the news for much of the last several months because of local protests against the communist Chinese regime.
With the protests over, there’s no better time to visit. That’s especially the case with airfares to the former British colony as low as $792 out of Detroit on Air Canada with a connection in Toronto, according to Google Flights. If you can get to Seattle using frequent flier miles, airfare is only $479, also on Air Canada.
The super-cheap airfare allows one to splurge on a hotel such as The Peninsula, which is one of the best in the world.
For families, Hong Kong’s Disneyland won’t disappoint. From Hong Kong, one can also take an excursion to Macau, an ex-Portuguese colony known as the Las Vegas of Asia.
2. COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG
This is where you go to experience the American history seldom taught in school anymore.
Best of all, Virginia’s Colonial Williamsburg is but a short drive from Jamestown — America’s first permanent English colony — and Yorktown, where the American Revolution was won with George Washington’s decisive 1781 victory over the British.
Out of Flint, flights on United to Norfolk are as low as $221, according to Google Flights. Airfares to Newport News/Williamsburg out of Flint on Delta are about $262 through early June, also according to Google Flights.
1. ROMANIA
Off the map for many American tourists, Romania’s Transylvania is full of authentic Old World charm.
You will discover small villages built around old Saxon churches and fortifications, outstanding wine and excellent food. Outdoor enthusiasts will want to venture beyond Transylvania to nearby Buzau County for the Muddy Volcanoes.
Romania is one of the best values on an otherwise expensive European continent. And if you must, there’s also the whole Dracula-thing.
Make the Bella Muzica Hotel in Brasov your home base after flying into the Romanian capital of Bucharest. Airfares are as low as $976 on American and partner British Airways out of Flint, according to Google Flights.
